A LITTLE EASTER ISLAND HISTORY
If you’re not familiar with Easter Island or the famous half-buried heads, here is a quick tour. Easter Island covers roughly 64 square miles in the South Pacific and was annexed from Chile in the late 19th century.
The earliest inhabitants were known as Rapa Nui, and the island was named Paaseiland (Easter Island) by Dutch explorers. Now the island is a tourist destination today known primarily for an array of 900 giant stone figures that date back centuries.
The statues reveal their creators to be master craftsman and engineers and are distinctive among other stone sculptures found in Polynesian cultures.
Averaging 13 feet high, with a weight of 13 tons, the enormous stone busts were made of consolidated volcanic ash and placed on top of ceremonial stone platforms. The statures that remain today were likely built by the inhabitants in the 700-850 A.D. and again in 1050-1680.
There has been much speculation into their purpose and how they were constructed and transported around the island. When you wear your Easter Island Head inspired t-shirt, you place yourself our footing down as a person who values history, a past that is set in stone.
